Book Review 01: Sachiiro no One Room 幸色のワンルーム 1 - 4 (2017)

Sachiiro no One Room
a.k.a 幸色のワンルーム

A girl who's only 14-years-old endures a tough life. At home, her parents physically and emotionally abuse her. At school, she is bullied by her classmates. She really does not belong anywhere. She has no one to lean on. Until one day...

My curiosity for Sachiiro no One Room started when I saw the first episode of TV adaptation. Right after finishing episode 1, I wanted to know more of the story so I went ahead and read the manga.

In volume 1, the story starts out by revealing an alleged kidnapping of xxx-san. The  girl refutes the news about her kidnapping and she discloses that her parents abuse her. Now, bother her mother and father are shedding crocodile tears on national television. She continued to share that her bruises are all because of her mother's doing. She would rather stay with her "kidnapper" than enduring more cuts, bruises, and insults from own mom.

The "kidnapper" was surprised to hear that she wouldn't go home. Instead of wanting to escape, she took this as an opportunity to start a new life and have a new name. Her "kidnapper" calls her Sachi, Kanji word for happiness.

Basically, Sachiiro no One Room is a story about two broken people who found solace in each other. It may not appeal to everyone. It may seem too dark and twisted for some, but in reality, things aren't exactly black and white. In this world, there's a bunch of gray areas. Bullying happens at school and the very people, that should protect you from the bullies, abuse you. Sigh.

These things can happen to anyone. Unfortunately, for Sachi, the only person who showed her compassion was her "kidnapper." I can feel that this series is going to break my heart. If Onii-san can make Sachi happy, then, I support her.

In the next volume, it's revealed that Onii-san is actually called Higashi-yama.(It could be a fake name though!) He has multiple temp jobs and in one of his jobs, he gets to work with Satou Miho. (Now, that girl is creepy because she follows Onii-san around. She even asked for his phone number because she believes that he is destined for her! WHAT THE HECK!)

There's someone even more creepy and that's Sachi's teacher. That perv teacher used to take advantage of poor Sachi. I hope he rots in hell!

It's a relief that the perv teacher finally got arrested in volume 3. Thanks to Onii-san!

The mother of Sachi continues to fake it and pretends that she is doing her best to find her daughter. She hires private detectives that are practically nobodies. If she truly cared for her daughter, she would hire the best! Too bad for her, one of the detectives noticed something odd about her behavior. The detective is convinced that the mom may have been abusing Sachi. (Good job detective Matsubase Hijiri!)

The lines are blurred here. If you think that Sachi should have followed her parents or her school teachers, they're the ones that should NOT be trusted! So much hate for the adults!

Sachi, at some point, even showed her dark side. She isn't your typical dumb victim. She knows what she's doing. In order to escape the harsh realities of life, she clings to Onii-san. She knows that she's going to need him more than he needs her.

Volume 4 takes you back to the day of Sachi's disappearance. You will learn about the truth and how it contradicts her mother's allegations in the previous volume.

The mother claims that Sachi didn't come home at 8PM, but she waited all night for someone to open the door. No one was there so she decide to wander around instead. This is when the "kidnapper" takes her in and she willingly follows him. Could you blame her? She had no friends and her parents took her for granted. They found happiness in each other. Their relationship might be screwed up, but it's all they have. Everyone deserves to be happy even if that happiness isn't exactly the ideal kind.

So, that's basically the summary of volumes 1 to 4. Can't wait for the next one!
