Movie Review 01: Our Times 我的少女时代 (2015)

Our Times
a.k.a 我的少女时代

This movie stars Joe Chen (Chen Qiao En) who plays the main character 真心 (or Truly in English.) She is not happy with her job and her younger officemates would make fun of her pushover attitude. Feeling sad that people don't appreciate all her efforts at work, she reminisces back to her high school days. Back then, things were simple and she would spend her days fangirling over Andy Lau. Truly always had a crush on their school heartthrob (Dino Lee) but unexpectedly, she forms an unlikely friendship with the the resident bad boy (Darren Wang.)

Our Times was released 3 years ago. Though this is Frankie Chen's directorial debut, she is already known for producing some of the popular Taiwanese dramas like Frog Prince100% SenoritaMy QueenAutumn's ConcertoMaterial Queen, and so on. Vivian Sung plays the younger 真心, Darren Wang plays Tai-yu, and Dino Lee is the popular Ouyang.

OH MY GOSH!
HOW COME I NEVER HEARD OF THIS MOVIE UNTIL NOW?
IT IS SOOOO GOOD!

Yes, the movie may remind you of other movies like A Little Thing Called Love or You Are the Apple of My Eye, but Our Times was still able to stand out from its contemporaries. The storytelling may have been common and some might find it a cliche, but the movie was able to generate a multitude of FEEEELS. (It is gonna be so hard to write a non-spoiler review, but I will try. My emotions are all over the place. Besides, I can't exactly reveal who is who in the PRESENT time.)

All I can say is that OUR TIMES will make you smile like an idiot, cry a river, swoon, and root for the main characters. More than anything else, the movie is about friendships that you form in high school. The actors did a very good job in portraying their characters because you could see yourself in them. They are not just mere characters of a cliche movie, but the characters reflect you.

AND THAT ENDING! I WAS HOLDING BACK MY TEARS THE WHOLE TIME, BUT THAT SURPRISE ENDING MADE ME CRY. (Sorry, I can't spoil, but there's a cameo. Don't worry because it's not a sad ending.)Though a lot might disagree, but for me, THE ENDING WAS PERFECT!

I just loved the way the characters conversed in the end. (Ugh! It touched my *fragile* heart.) There is STILL so much love after so many years of not seeing each other. Their words were delivered so softly yet you could obviously feel their longing. You could see that they are trying their best to hold back the tears. (But I couldn't help it anymore. I cried more than they did!)

If you want to watch a movie about the 90's, roller skating, unlikely friendships, true love, and Andy Lau, don't pass this up. I highly recommend OUR TIMES! In fact, it's now one of my favorite movies. It will make you remember the good old times when people hang out and life was not ruled by Facebook. Most importantly, the movie will remind you to be courageous and to never give up. Life will still offer you beautiful surprises along the way!
